120 million approved in Marbella and Estepona for comprehensive sanitation works

Whilst any announcement of Funds is Good News, what guarantees are there that the money will be spent in an appropriate and wise manner to remove the Odours. No mention is made in this report of resolving the issue of the Odours from the Plant or the Satellite stations. It is now even more important than ever that Citizens insist on proper investment to resolve the Odours and also, that we can be properly represented by an Expert to monitor the plan and the works. It is more important than ever to SMELLit-LOGit every time. This can then be compared as the months progress to ensure we have empirical data to evaluate success.

30 December 2024 – Meeting No 1 with Acosol and others – Positive but the beginning – not the end of the Journey!

On Monday, 30 December, representing our growing number of Members and local stakeholders and together with the General Manager of IKOS and the owners of Agrojardin we had a full and very productive meeting with the Mayor of Estepona and his Deputy; together with the President of Acosol and the CEO of the local Acosol Plant. They made all the right noises regarding admission of “issues”. In short, it seems that they accept that despite the growth of the area and the volumes being treated by the Plant, the odour treatment has lagged badly behind and has suffered from a severe lack of investment. They were proud of their recent work on the Pipe problems along the beach (mostly by the river mouth and outside IKOS). They confirmed that they have available funding to address the issue and to that end, we have a follow up meeting on Friday 10 January, this time at the Acosol Plant itself. I will be flying back for the day, and at that time, with technical support, we hope to be understanding and agreeing the steps that they are to take, hopefully within the next c 3 months. They have also assured us that they will address the currently embarrassing ventilation system on the Satellite unit on the beach, which currently comprises 2 windows, kept open on to the Paseo at nose level for all the passers-by to enjoy as they pass!

Whilst we will be holding off active campaigning pending that meeting and their undertakings, I would urge everyone that has not yet registered on the Website to do so as soon as possible, and to encourage others to” Sign, Follow and Download”. We absolutely need to keep the pressure on, remembering that 10 years ago, public, televised assurances were made that the problem HAD been resolved and those responsible have never been held to account! We do not want to risk being in the same position in 10 years’ time.

Please remind your friends, family and neighbours that c 2 minutes is all that it would take to Sign, Follow and Download. I also hope that as we are now recording instances of smells detected in the area, If you SMELL IT, please LOG IT on the NasApp. It takes less than 30 seconds.

We will update after the January 10 meeting.

Meeting Summary with Estepona Water Treatment Plant – January 10, 2025

Last Friday, representatives from our group met with the CEO and lead technicians at the Estepona Water Treatment Plant in Cancelada to address the ongoing issue of odours. While the meeting provided an opportunity to hear their proposals, their responses left many outstanding questions and issues.
Acosol reiterated their commitment to resolving the problem, evidencing their willingness to have two meetings since our first communication on December 19, at the Acosol headquarters on December 30 and this one at the plant.
